General Hospital Casting News: Soap Vet Daniel Cosgrove Joins As Ezra

Daniel Cosgrove, who has previously starred on four daytime soaps and a prime-time sudser (Beverly Hills, 90210, where he played Matt from 1998-2000), is adding General Hospital to his list of credits.

On Friday, March 21, he will make his first Port Charles appearance as politician Ezra Boyle.

Boyle-ing Point

In an interview with TV Insider, which was the first to report the news, Cosgrove revealed that he had originally come in to GH in January to audition for the recast role of Jack Brennan (Chris McKenna was tapped for that part).

In his try-out for Brennan, Cosgrove reunited with former Guiding Light castmate Laura Wright (Carly), who he worked with during his Springfield days playing Bill Lewis; at the time, Wright was playing Cassie Layne.

And while the show went another way with Brennan, the offer to play his new role, Ezra, came shortly thereafter.

“They told me a little bit about him, and one or two people I’d be working with, but they kind of kept things tight-lipped. Now, I probably have been filming for the past month and a half.”

Cosgrove last appeared in daytime in 2016, when his two-year stint as Aiden Jennings on Days of Our Lives came to an end. Prior to that gig, Cosgrove’s soap roots stretch back to All My Children, where he played Scott Chandler from 1996-98. He returned to the role from 2010-11, by which time he’d also worked on GL (2002-05; 2007-09) and As the World Turns (2010). In 2018, Cosgrove starred as Ben in the first season of Lifetime’s YOU — but in recent years, he told TV Insider, he has been focusing on professional endeavors outside of acting. Working on GH, he grinned, has “reignited something in me, such an appreciation and such an excitement and a love” for performing.

It’s a good thing, too, since it sounds like he’ll be kept plenty busy with his GH duties. Cosgrove described his new character, Ezra, as “a consummate politician,” one who will interact with Port Charles’s recently elected congressman, Drew — but he’ll interact with more players than just his former AMC co-star Cameron Mathison (Drew; ex-Ryan, AMC).

According to Cosgrove, Ezra “is kind of mixing it up with a lot of the cast, from Genie Francis, Mayor Collins, to the Quartermaines, to just kind of creating a little bit of a thorn in the side to some of the good folk of Port Charles.”
